After spending an hour and a half (again) cleaning out comment spam, I decided to take more active measures to ensure that we don't get hit by comment spammers. To do that, I downloaded and installed Jay Allen's MT-Blacklist plugin for MovableType, upgrading MovableType to the most recent available version in the process. This should make dealing with comment spam enormously easier.
